Richard
Cole was born in Edmonton, Alberta Canada 1968. He first started
oil painting in 1980 and has continued ever since. After finishing
a four year program at Alberta College of Art in Calgary, he started a
business as a decorative finisher and mural artist. He became involved
with design, working with interior designers and architects. Richard
developed his appreciation for interior design and was considered the most
sought after decorative painter in Western Living Magazine. Also
during this time the success of his first solo exhibition at Newzones Gallery
brought recognition in the Calgary art community.
In
1995 Richard moved to Vancouver BC Canada with his wife Kira Wu.
Here in Vancouver Richard worked in the film industry as a scenic painter
and kept a studio in the back of Access -an artist run centre. In
1998 Richard was hired as the studio technician for the School for Contemporary
Arts at Simon Fraser University. During this time Richard moved his
studio to Gastown and received work as a background painter for the animation
industry. Richard also started teaching figure drawing classes for
the Vancouver School Board.
In
the summer of 2001 Richard started a series of landscapes based on the
west coast. The success of a sold out exhibition at the Portfolio gallery
has given Richard the opportunity to pursue this theme further.
