"My inspiration comes from living on the west coast and enjoying our weather," says Richard, who moved to Vancouver from the prairies eight years ago. "The rainy weather took some time to get used to, but once I started painting it, I really started to appreciate it." 

This 'Featured Artist Exhibition' is an annual event at the Van Dop Gallery. "It's a time set aside each fall to showcase the new work of a particular local artist," says Trudy Van Dop, gallery owner. "During the exhibition opening, guests are not only invited to view Richard Cole's new works, simply titled The Forest, but they will also enjoy a rare opportunity to meet the artist and gain first hand insight about his inspirations and how he approaches his work." 

Richard's techniques resemble Renaissance painting. Conscious of colour, he uses layering, dry brushing and glazing-techniques which transfer well into his landscape work. In this latest series of paintings, he has used soft focus techniques to create depth and guide the viewer through the work. By painting abstract objects in the background, he is able to draw the eye to the detail of the foreground.  

Richard Cole is a graduate of the Alberta College of Art in Calgary. From the majestic beauty of a still shoreline to the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean, Richard is at home painting the natural beauty of British Columbia's west coast.
