Lex Alfred Hedley

"Birds are a central part of my life. Living in a rushed, urban environment, they offer me an easily accessible link to nature that is contemplative and restorative.  I spend a lot of time sketching and drawing in the countryside and it is these encounters with nature that form the basis of my work.  This knowledge of the natural world allows me to create personal narratives.  It is through these that opportunities arise to connect my experiences in nature with those of other people."

Although Lex works in most media; he enjoys watercolour most finding it best suited for landscape studies, and unsurpassed for rendering the sheen and softness of bird plumage.  His chosen specialty is drybrush over wash and he works in the contemporary realist style.

Black-capped Chickadees

"Some appreciate Black-capped Chickadees for their cheeriness and good nature.  Others enjoy their acrobatic, inquisitive approach to the world.  To me, they are confiding and easy to approach, although rarely still.  In their world, something is always about to happen.  As an artist, my challenge was to create a work encapsulating all these qualities in  a situation arresting their constant movement, if only for a split second in time."

the Englishman's family

"Introduced from Great Britain to New York in 1850, House Sparrows spread rapidly across North America.  Although unwelcome, this invasion and the completeness of their success is attributable to their adaptability and toughness.  Ironically, each year this vast movement depended upon the survival of fledglings such as these, although these sleepy youngsters scarcely appear adaptable or tough."

the falconer's glove

"Bewick's Wrens often seek nest sites in odd places in old buildings, brush piles and so on.  Intrigued by this quirky adaptiveness, I decided to paint this little female brooding her clutch in a hawking glove. Although in the colder months this glove has but a single purpose, left hanging on a wall in summer days, it makes an ideal home for an enterprising Bewick's Wren."

Secret Place

"Each spring, a vast multitude of  female Mallard withdraw into hidden worlds within the margins of innumerable ponds, lakes and rivers to rear their young. In our busy lives, we never notice this great disappearing - and regrettably, are rarely encouraged to think about the wonder of these secret place of gently swaying reeds, and soft afternoon sunlight."
