"Working
as a geologist in northern Canadian locations, Nathaniel Noel has had a
unique opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat. Today,
he uses those first-hand observations as a basis for the stone sculptures
he creates in his studio of Lawrence Pond, Upper Gullies, Newfoundland.
Noel
has been carving for more than twenty years. Over time he has developed
a distinctive and very personal approach to his subject matter and to the
material in which he works. That material is a local type of soapstone
composed of the mineral pyrophyllite. This material occurs near Manuels,
a community just down the road from his studio. It is the only place in
North America where material of this type has been commercially mined.
The stone ranges in colour from pale yellow to pale green. Sometimes the
presence of iron and sulphur may vary the colour of the stone from pink
to green to greenish brown. Its hardness is greater than the green variety
of copestone used by most northern native cultures of Canada. Noel's work
is found in many collections throughout the world including those of Nelson
Mandela (1989), Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (1989), and Her Royal Highness
Princess Ann (1991)." |
