| Sol Maya is a Native American of Mayan ancestry who now
lives and works in British Columbia. The artist's inspiration comes from
his Native American spirituality, his love of surfing and his interest
in space and the stars. The artist wants people who view his work to
feel what he feels and speaks to his wish to share his 'rings' with the
people of the world. Maya's functional glass pieces are a marvel of
shape and reflection.
Maya started his career studying ceramics, sculpture and printmaking at Santa Barbara City College in California. He moved from Santa Barbara to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1992 and worked for several years with David New Small (who Sol has great respect for) at New Small & Sterling Studio Glass before building his own studio in West Vancouver in 2002.
Maya's glass has been exhibited at the Atkinson Gallery and the Santa Barbara Art Gallery in California. He has had solo exhibitions at the
Ferry Building Gallery, Silk Purse in West Vancouver, New-Small & Sterling Studio Glass on Granville Island, the North Vancouver District Hall, North Delta's Fire Hall Centre for the Arts, the West End Gallery in Victoria, the Reflecting Spirit Gallery, Mountain Craft Gallery in Whistler, and the Flot Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His work is also held in many private collections around the land.
